ECO-PLASTIC

ECO-PLASTIC is a start-up under Kinnaird Business Incubation Center, Cohort-I 2023, Without a doubt, plastic has many benefits. However, its use has severe consequences on the environmental, economic, social, and physical health of all lives on earth. Most everyday items are made of plastic, such as food wrappers, plastic grocery bags, toothbrushes, and plastic straws. Over 5 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year—that is 160,000 a second. The rate of increase in plastic production is more than that of any other material. If this is allowed to continue in the same manner as it has since the 1970s, plastic production is estimated to reach 1100 million tons by the end of 2050. Only 3% of plastic products are recycled worldwide.  Plastic’s most useful feature, its durability, is also the property that prevents its degradation in the natural environment. It takes about 1,000 years to break down. Most plastics are polymerized from ethylene or propylene monomers derived from the fractional distillation of petroleum. During the polymerization process, the monomers are linked together by extremely strong carbon–carbon bonds which are very difficult to degrade in nature. In developing countries, like Pakistan, that lack proper waste management systems, plastic waste poses serious public health concerns. It can block sewage systems, which ultimately act as breeding sites for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying pests, thus resulting in high cases of vector-borne infections such as dengue and malaria. Unhealthy ecosystems, soils, and water systems directly or indirectly affect the socio-economic aspects of a country. Synthetic plastics are xenobiotic and have negative environmental impacts, such as affecting the soil microbial community, which plays a key role in maintaining (1) soil fertility, (2) health, and (3) detoxifying ability. Therefore, their introduction into the environment must be minimized. Biopolymers from microbial fermentation have now been recognized as an environment-friendly replacement for toxic nondegradable synthetic plastic.
